  • Do You Know You Can Set Guinness World Record of Underwater Wedding In Andaman Islands?

What do you think about a ‘Wet Wedding Day”? Probably nothing much but a disaster, right? But not for the adventurous bride and groom Hiroyuki Yoshida (Japan) and Sandra Smith (USA) who set a world record for the deepest underwater wedding. Both of them are diving instructors who tied the knot at 130 meters below the surface in a cave at Song Hong Lake, Trang, Thailand in September 2013. Definitely not a conventional wedding, this one required six months of intensive training so that the couple could achieve their goal of reaching the vertical depths of the ocean.

Speaking of the largest underwater wedding world record, the ceremony of Ewa Staronska and Pawel Burkowski (both from Poland) holds the record. The wedding was achieved by 303 divers who attended their celebration under the water during an event organised by Orka Group Ltd (Poland) at the Koparki Diving Base, Jaworzno, Poland, in August 2011. The whole ceremony lasted nearly eighteen minutes. Waterproof texts and a system of sign language were used for the underwater communication between the couple and the priest.

Do you know why we have told you about the largest and the deepest underwater wedding world records? How about if you can set a new record with your own underwater wedding? Don’t worry, we are not telling you to exchange rings at the depth of 130 meters because that can be done only by experienced divers and that too with extreme training. But what about the largest underwater wedding? Totally doable, right? You can tie the knot in presence of say 400 divers. And the best place to do so is undoubtedly the Andaman Islands! Such natural beauty and richness of the marine world cannot be found anywhere else in India.

Let us tell you how you can set a new world record along with having the best time of your life!

Where to set the world record for the largest underwater wedding?

If you have decided to have the wedding of the decade, then the first thing to plan is where you want to have your underwater wedding. Location is essential because you have to consider certain factors, weather conditions being the most important one. You already know that you can have an underwater wedding in the Andaman Islands, but exactly where? You will need a huge number of divers, PADI certified instructors to assist both of you, equipment for yourself and everyone, someone to hold your rings, underwater decoration, underwater photographers and videographers, and a lot more. All these arrangements have to be made well in advance which cannot be done on an individual level. Therefore, you need experienced planners who would help you with everything. We would highly recommend Havelock Island Beach Resort as it is a trusted and reliable name across the Andaman Islands. It will provide you with everything that is required in an underwater wedding and will ensure a lifetime of magic for both of you!

    Why get married underwater?

Underwater weddings are more relaxed than a conventional celebration. The bride can still wear the traditional white flowy gown and the groom can choose to wear a classy suit while diving. Otherwise, both of you can wear a scuba diving suit if you want to. Under the water, you will see several inquisitive fish and colorful corals. You will connect at a spiritual level with the ocean. It would be a place of calmness and tranquility far from the chaos of daily life. If you want to witness natural beauty, then this is the place to be. All this, while you are creating a world record by having the largest underwater wedding!

Moreover, if you think about an underwater wedding from a practical point of view, then this means that you don’t have to worry about pricey flowers and décor, and other expensive arrangements. You will save yourself from burning a big hole in your pocket.

Common interest is the key aspect of a happy relationship

Most of the to-be brides get anxious about the weather forecast for signs of rain on the D-Day, but for the adventurous couple, this is not something to get worried about. Ocean lovers from all over the world want a seafloor as their wedding venue. Common interest is the key aspect of any successful relationship and thus, getting married under the water is an awesome way to rejoice your exceptional bonding. The idea of exchanging vows and rings under the water is gaining more and more popularity as this is something that no one is ever going to forget their whole lives. Not even your guests!

These days, people have understood the importance of collecting experiences rather than materialistic stuff to show off their social status. Gone are the days when people wanted to throw an extravagant wedding party. Couples are now rendering that unnecessary and focusing on the outstanding feeling of living their life to the fullest with the love of their life. If you want to have a small, intimate wedding and invite only your near and dear ones who love you from the bottom of their heart, then an underwater wedding is what you need.

The major reason for having an underwater wedding is the uniqueness of your big day. Not everyone has such kind of an exclusive wedding. You need to have something that would stand out from the crowd.

For your underwater wedding ceremony, the most beautiful backdrop will be created by the lovely scenery and marine life. There is no need to hire the services of decorators as Mother Nature has got everything covered with its gorgeousness. It is obvious for the bride and groom to want photos and videos of their big day celebrations held underwater. An underwater photographer and videographer will also be provided by Havelock Island Beach Resort for this purpose.

What should you wear in your underwater wedding?

As a bride, you don’t need to give up on wearing your gorgeous white dress that you had bought for the most special day of your life. Couples choose to wear traditional wedding clothing for their underwater wedding. However, if you prefer neoprene to silk and satin, then white bridal wetsuits are also available just for you. And those getting married in warm tropical water are most likely to prefer wearing bathing suits for the occasion. But the most important thing to consider is that whatever you choose to wear, exchanging your fancy heels in favour of scuba fins or water shoes would surely be a great idea.

Your underwater wedding ceremony will be held a few feet below sea level, and you can be accompanied by your close friends and family members along with so many other scuba divers. An underwater stage made of coconut shells, flowers, and palm leaves can be set up. The rich and colorful marine life will form the landscape for the ceremony. The vows can be exchanged using placards. Getting wedding goals already??

    Things to be considered carefully

There are a number of positive aspects of an underwater wedding. But you should also know that there are certain things that need to be kept in mind and require careful consideration. Safety is of utmost importance. You may be a competent diver under normal conditions, but the question is will you be able to dive in safely on the D-Day. Exchanging rings with the love of your life includes an intricate combination of powerful emotions that range from acute nerves to dizzying love. In such circumstances, remembering to keep in mind practicalities such as buoyancy control may be pretty tough.

Moreover, there are certain aspects of traditional wedding experience that cannot be incorporated into an underwater wedding. For instance, if wearing that incredible white wedding dress has always been your dream, then you should know that wearing it underneath the waves will not look that good after it is soaked in salty water. Likewise, even the world’s top makeup artist will not be able to do anything about the obscure effect of mask and regulator.

Special arrangements done by Havelock Island Beach Resort

When you are under the water, it is necessary for you to be able to stay in one place long enough so that you can exchange vows and rings. Thus, a spot with minimal current or surge is perfect. Don’t worry, it will be picked by the PADI certified divers of the resort. To make the whole experience absolutely comfortable for everyone, selecting a tropical location not requiring more than nine millimeters of neoprene is ideal. Things under the water should be as safe and as simple as possible, and this will be made sure by the crew of Havelock Island Beach Resort. That’s why the resort’s divers will pick a shallow spot with plenty of bottom time and good natural light. This will ensure amazing photographs as well. And for all these arrangements, you don’t have to worry at all. Each and everything will be taken care of by the resort. All you need to do is tell them your requirements.

    What about non-diving guests?

If you don’t want to limit your guest list, then provisions for all those guests should be made by the resort’s staff for those who can’t dive and would prefer enjoying the ceremony on land. This is not very simple. The resort’s banquet hall or any other place can be kept as the venue for the reception of the couple after it comes out. In the meantime, the live video of the underwater ceremony will be displayed on big screens. So, you won’t miss out on anything. You can be a part of the celebration on land.

    Nightlife in Havelock Islands

While preparing a travel itinerary of the Andaman Islands, you may notice how your day will start early in the morning and end by evening. You might have heard that the islands don’t have much to offer when it comes to nightlife. Maybe you think that the place retires after sunset. But you should know that Havelock Island has a unique night culture that is not known by everyone. There is a lot to do there at night. Get set ready to know something exclusive. Offbeat, romantic, peaceful, and adventurous- the ‘Havelock Nightlife’ has a lot for you!

    Go for night scuba diving

Don’t forget to go for one of the finest scuba diving experiences in India that you can have in Havelock Island. If you love the ocean and are a scuba diver as well, this you should not miss night scuba diving when in the Andaman Islands. Diving with a torch is in itself is an enthralling experience but what’s going to be an unforgettable experience is the richness of marine life that you are going to see under the water. This activity is seasonal and depends on weather conditions. You can talk to established PADI diver centres to know more about this.

The unique topography of the Andaman Island makes the diving experience hard to get anywhere else. Most of its beaches are enclosed by long stretches of reefs that are hundreds of meters wide and are separated by the shore with shallow waters. Some of them are complemented by volcanic lava hills as well! The alive and untouched corals are home to the world’s most vivacious marine dwellers and fish that may pop-out from the azure ocean and display a gorgeous scene around the scuba diver. The abundance of corals and fish often enclose the diver from all directions that is enough to leave him in wonder and awe. Thanks to the protection offered by the Andaman Administration.

  • After working for 8 years in the media field, I decided to escape the corporate world in pursuit of a bigger adventure. Trip to Andaman & Nicobar Islands was my first vacation after I had left my job to pursue travelling with more time and focus. My friend, a fashion enthusiast, who joined me from Denmark, was also without a job at that time as she had decided to not settle down until she gets her dream job. Driven by our immense love for travelling, we both decided to take a trip to this union territory located in the Bay of Bengal. The twist was that we had to do it in the lowest budget possible, and that was exactly what we did. We took lift from people, walked to cover long distances, and everything else that helped us save even a few bucks. Lesson learnt—usually considered an expensive place, you can still make your escape to Havelock Island as pocket-friendly as you want.

Read about our journey to know how.

    How To Reach Havelock Island?

There are ferries plying from Port Blair that take nearly two and a half hours to reach to Havelock Island. Booking in advance is not necessary. You can ask your hotel receptionist to book it for you.

Hop Around These Beaches In Havelock Island!

There are a number of beaches in Havelock Island, and we went to see the most gorgeous ones. Our list included the following:

    Vijay Nagar Beach

It’s a quiet beach having white sand, turquoise water and coconut trees. It is so calm and you can actually feel the sea breeze flowing around you. You won’t find many people there. It is perfect for nature lovers and photographers. Moreover, you should definitely go there during night time. It will be an altogether different experience.

    vijay-nagar-beach.jpg

    Elephant Beach

We left in a beachy dress and flip-flop, and headed towards Elephant Beach, not knowing that there is no road network to reach there. One has to take either ferry or trek for an hour to get there. We chose the latter and decided to do it on our own (without hiring a guide) because it was absolutely free of cost that way.

    Elephant-Beach-1024x407.png

The 1.8-kilometer-long trek to the Elephant Beach has resulted in permanently ending my fear of crabs, lizards, seashell insects, and other creepy-crawlies that used to make me scream before. The muddy path was full of them. We had to just move ahead ignoring all of them. And all this was totally worth it. When we finally reached the beach, oh God, it was paradise. It was beautiful beyond any words. Also, there was nobody else at that time. The whole beach was ours!! It was like a huge, endless blanket of different shades of blue. The grandeur of bright green trees grown on white sand below the white clouds that looked like cotton candy tucked in a clear blue sky is indescribable. There were a variety of beautiful shells spread all over the place like jewels. The splendor of this beach cannot be described in any words or photographs. You get to feel it yourself by seeing it with your own eyes.

Apart from getting surrounded by an aura of magnificence here, you can also indulge in an underwater fun activity- sea walking. This beach is known for offering a fabulous view of the underwater marine life. Earlier, scuba diving could also be done there but now that has been discontinued and is open for sea walking only.

    Radhanagar Beach

It took us only twenty minutes via scooty to reach Radhanagar Beach from Elephant Beach. It is counted among Asia’s most beautiful and the world’s top ten beaches. The white silky sand, emerald blue sea and white foam waves make it a perfect spot for relaxing amid the natural beauty. There are lush and verdant trees on its side. No water sports are allowed there in order to preserve the gorgeousness of this attraction; so you can choose to either swim or sunbathe at this tranquil beach. I would suggest going there in the late afternoon so that you can see the lovely sunset in the evening.

    Radhanagar-Beach-1024x546.png

This marvelous slice of heaven is my favorite beach in Havelock Island. You can’t get enough of it in just one visit. That’s why we went there again the next day. It’s a must-visit for every nature and beach lover. Your beach vacation is incomplete without including Radhanagar Beach in your itinerary.

    Kalapathar Beach

Just a 25-minute drive from Radhanagar Beach will take you to this pristine beach. With dense forest in the backdrop, Kalapathar Beach is a long stretch of golden sand beds, aqua water and big black rocks. It is a small but delightful beach. You can stroll here amidst the stunning scenic beauty while feeling the cool breeze on your face. The black rocks along the seashore present a vivid contrast with the bright sand. There are green forests engulfing the beach from all sides.

    Kalapathar-Beach.jpg

You have to go to Havelock Island to see the best beaches in India. It is a home of pristine beauty. Along with that, the people there are amazing as well. They are considerate and ready to help.

Remember, you can make your travel as luxurious as possible, but also as cheap as possible. To get the complete value of our money, we booked our stay at Havelock Island Beach Resort. I have seen all kinds of resorts and hotels, and I can say without any doubt that this is among the best accommodations I have ever stayed in. The staff was polite and it also booked our scuba diving slot at Nemo Reef which was again an unforgettable experience for us.

So start planning and get set, go. Havelock Island will be a great addition to your travel list.

    Happy travelling!!

  • For ocean lovers, the world is twice as huge than for ordinary people. The vastness of a sea offers a lot to explore, and is completely different from anything else that you have experienced before. The underwater world is totally unique where you can witness hundreds of species in their natural habitat as well as gorgeous landscapes. And if you are diving for the first time, then it is like discovering a new continent or stepping on the moon.

    Safety-while-diving-1.png

    Safety-while-diving.png

Making you a part of the ocean, scuba diving is a wonderful adventure activity. It makes you feel as if you are just another fish swimming in the water. However, it is not an easy sport and involves some serious risks. That’s why mastering it requires a lot of practice and knowledge. And to do that, you have to start with your first fun dive. Many people take a basic course before going on an actual dive in order to learn the basics of breathing, floating, controlling the pressure, etc. They start in a swimming pool and move to the sea when they start feeling comfortable. Following the instructor step by step, they learn to dive and feel like a native of the underwater universe.

    Diving-with-safety-3.pngDiving-with-safety-4.png

If you have decided to go for your first scuba dive, then these tips will help you a lot in doing it the correct way. But the most crucial thing is to always follow the directions of your trainer.

#1 Pick up a good day

Diving is greatly affected by weather conditions. Underwater currents are created by waves and they make it tough to reach the point of immersion. If the conditions are unfavorable, then try another day. No compromise should be made in such a situation.

#2 Get all your questions answered

You should not go underwater with doubts in your mind because once you are down, then you will not be able to communicate. It is vital that you know what you should do at any time, the protocols, etc. In order to ensure total safety, ask everything from your instructor whatever is there in your mind.

    #3 Breathe!

Remember to breathe normally because you have an oxygen cylinder on your back. There may be situations when your nerves or instinct may make you keep from holding your breath while you dive. But just focus on relaxing along with inhaling and exhaling slowly as if you were on the land. Never hold your breath!

    #4 Follow your gut feeling

Believe your instinct. We, humans, are wise and can perceive, instinctively, when something is not going as planned. In case of doubt, analyze the situation and contact your trainer.

    #5 Look but don’t touch

Forget what you see in movies or documentaries. The basic rule under the water is to look at everything but touch nothing. Even if you want to. There are different fishes, seaweed, corals, etc. about which you don’t know anything. They may harm you if you interfere in their privacy. Be cautious!

    #6 Rise cautiously

After the dive, do not be in a rush to return to the surface. By hurrying, you can hurt your lungs because of experiencing a sudden change in pressure. You should rise slower than the column of bubbles released with each exhalation of air.

    # 7 Don’t move too much

In comparison with air, water is nearly 800 times denser. Thus, any movement means much more effort. Try not to move too much so that you don’t get tired fast, and some air is saved.

    #8 Be a good partner

You only have one another under the water. So try to be a good diving partner always. Know your limitations as well as your partner’s- diving level, health status, underwatercommunication, equipment status, etc.

#9 Get ready (physically & mentally)

Safe diving includes excellent physical fitness and attitude. It is essential that you maintain a positive outlook under the water and also be able to control your nerves in case you come across any trouble.

    #10 Check the equipment

Two pairs of eyes see more than one. So, make sure that you check yours as well as your partner’s equipment before the dive. Also, make sure that the neoprene and glasses adapt properly to your body.

You will be prepared for your first dive in the open sea by following the above-explained tips as well as the ones your instructor gives you. Live such a magical experience to the fullest and capture everything in your eyes because what the first scuba dive offers is something that is hard to find anywhere else!

Jacques Cousteau already said it, “The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” When you will be underwater, nothing else will matter at all. You will experience the ultimate calmness. You will feel like an astronaut who is exploring a whole new planet. Everything will move slowly, including your fins and heartbeat. All your worries and problems will be left behind on dry land. You will simply breathe and enjoy whatever your eyes will witness. Fishes will come closer to you out of their curiosity. Youwill be an alien in their world. If you have decided to take that leap of faith, then Havelock Island (now known as Swaraj Dweep) is your one-stop destination. The island is known for the best diving spots in India. The azure waters are clear that ensure good visibility. Also, you may spot colorful corals at some sites. You can book your stay as well as the scuba diving slot at a well-known property in Andaman Island- Havelock Island Beach Resort. Its PADI certified divers are committed to make sure that you have an experience of a lifetime under the water. The instructor will be with you during the whole time of your dive.

  • These days, many of us have started to prefer an intimate wedding in an exotic destination. Gone are the days when one wanted to invite hundreds of guests to their conventional and big fat wedding celebrations. Now, couples want to have special, peaceful, and snug ceremonies that are in some way an extension of who they are.

Your search ends in Andaman Island if the upper limit of your guest list is somewhere in double digits and if you have always liked the idea of having your wedding on an isolated island. The enchanting beaches revealing the blue hues will give your senses a natural high.

However, everything is not that easy at all. There are a few crucial things that you should consider before finalising the Andaman Island as your beach wedding destination.

    #1 Weather is God

    7-3.png

The climate of this island is tropical. Throughout the year, temperatures remain in the range of 22-32 degrees Celsius. However, monsoons can play spoiler. Ferries and flights are often cancelled or delayed between mid-May and mid-September as it is the period of heavy rains. Thus, you cannot plan a wedding during this time.

Late November to mid-April is the ideal time period. Months from December to March are sunny with favorable diving conditions and turtle nesting. Thus, the place is relatively crowded during this time. But you can consider planning your wedding here until August.

#2 Don’t expect too much luxury

    8-3.png

Everybody has a different idea of luxury. For some, the fanciest car is the true lavishness while for others, it’s all about having a vacation in a cruise line sipping the costliest wine. Then there is one more category of people for whom spending a good time close to nature is the ultimate luxury. If you and your would-be are also one of them, then you will definitely be able to find luxury in abundance in Andamans. The fresh air, cool breeze, palm trees, and vast stretches of the blue ocean are enough to spoil you to a great extent. You would find true happiness by carrying out your wedding ceremonies at a distance from the chaotic city life.

#3 Not overly grand, luxurious & super expensive properties

Andaman Island is not known for excessively posh hotel properties. Rather, it has the most beautiful and delightful boutique resorts in the lap of nature. If you have decided to get hitched here, then we would love to recommend you the best resort for your beach wedding- Havelock Island Beach Resort. You can exchange rings or have a traditional Indian wedding with pheras at this fancy resort that is popular for its private gorgeous sandy beach, an azure ocean, and tropical greenery. This charming property in Havelock Island is perfect for lovebirds to have ceremonies by the turquoise waters. You can customise the wedding menu and have a delicious lunch under the blue sky as well. Its quaintness will make you go weak at your knees. The wooden cottages of the resort are sure to get appreciated by you as well as your guests. It is the perfect spot for an intimate ethereal wedding.

    #4 Logistics and suppliers

    2-5-1024x541.png

There are no direct flights to Andaman Island from everywhere. For instance, if you are flying from Delhi or Mumbai, then you will have a layover in Hyderabad or somewhere else. From there, you will be flying to Port Blair, the capital of the island. Its airport is Vir Savarkar Airport. However, there are direct flights also from a few cities such as Chennai, Bangalore, and Kolkata.

To reach any major island from Port Blair, you will be required to take a government ferry or faster private catamaran. However, the timetables are not predictable and services are slow. Sometimes, it can take up to three to four hours to reach Havelock or Neil Island.

These islands are not that much commercialised and thus, services like that of decorators, etc. are limited. But then, the island is miraculously stunning that it doesn’t need any artificial decorations. A surreal, simple, and organic set up can be created with different varieties of flowers, seashells, and candles. But if you have booked Havelock Island Beach Resort, then you don’t have to worry at all. All the required services will be available here including a photographer and makeup artist as well. Just leave everything to their expert planners and you focus on having the most romantic day of your life.

    #5 A little unconventional entertainment

    10-3-1024x601.png

Andamans offer a different kind of amusement. Shadi band and DJ set up in these farfetched islands is not a good idea because that can be done in your own city as well. So, what’s the point of travelling all the way here? In this little piece of heaven, you should entertain yourself and your guests with diverse activities like snorkeling, diving, kayaking, island hopping, nature walks, and sea walking. If you are an adventure-lover, then this is the best place for you to exchange rings. No wedding can be more memorable than this for anyone who is going to attend it.

These are a few reality checks that we have presented to just give you a little heads up on what to expect when you are picturising your marriage celebrations in the unbelievably enthralling islands. If you and your partner are of those kinds who want a unique and unconventional sort of wedding, then choosing the magical Andaman Islands would be the best decision ever because nothing can get more delightful than this.

The best thing is that there are options for every budget, ranging from 5-star properties to affordable beach resorts. What does an underwater wedding involve?

    2-6-1024x591.png

    • There are certain places that require you to be a PADI certified diver first. But don’t worry in case you are not one because there are a number of other scuba diving sites that don’t need any kind of certification. Undoubtedly, you will have a lot more freedom underwater if you are certified. And if you are not, then the instructors will go down with you to assist you under the water.
    • There are some hotels and resorts that offer different underwater wedding package deals to get you and your partner certified before the D-Day. They also provide a few rehearsals.
    • If you choose to get married in a shallow area, then you can have all your guests around you to witness the ceremony. This could be just four-feet water.
    • To make the wedding legal, the presence of a certified officiator is mandatory. He can be arranged by the resort or the company doing your wedding planning. And since you can’t sign anything under the water, he will give you documents as soon as you both get out of the water.
    • As you can’t say your vows under the water, you can say them ahead of time. You can also choose to write them on a dry erase board or a laminated sheet, and carry it down with you. And if you don’t want to necessarily ‘say’ yes, then you can make use of sign language options. Sounds exciting, right?
    • You can still wear your lovely white wedding dress and classy tuxedo under the waves. It would be so much fun. You don’t have to compromise on anything at all!
    • A very popular and preferred beach resort located in the Havelock Island of Andamans, Havelock Island Beach Resort, is capable of making arrangements of an expert photographer and videographer so that you can capture great shots of your underwater ceremony. The most precious moments of your life deserve to get recorded, and the resort will fulfill this wish of yours.
    • Are you thinking about how your friends and family will attend your underwater wedding? Don’t worry. The resort’s experienced underwater videographer will stream the live video from down for everyone present back on land. They can watch the entire ceremony on big screens.
    • You can also choose to bring the best man and maid of honor underwater along with you.
    • After coming out of the water, the couple can get dressed again and have a high-spirited reception party with all the champagne popping to celebrate with its near and dear ones later.
    • Havelock Island, which is a great ocean destination, is known for its highly delicious seafood. Luckily, the best on the whole island is served at the Havelock Island Beach Resort. So, your guests are definitely going to remember the food until so many years to come. Hands down, the catering services of the resort are excellent.
